High Specification Mixes

Our High Specification mixes have the enhanced properties required for challenging applications. From very High Strength Concrete (up to 70 MPa), to large volume mass pours, to corrosion protection, to many other specific material and performance properties, our mix designs can be tailored to meet your unique project needs.

Performance Mixes

Our Performance Mix designs have been designed to ideally suit specific applications:

  • Self-Compacting Concrete: With very high flow characteristics, rapid placement, and no requirement for manual finishing to create a smooth and attractive finish, it is ideally suited for large horizontal slabs.
  • ICF Form Mix: Created specifically for Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) wall construction and other formwork with dense rebar or tight passages. This mix is characterized by excellent flow properties and requires virtually no vibration to create a smooth and attractive finish that is free of voids.
  • Low Density Fill: An economical, low-density specialty mix for filling open excavations. It has lower density, lower strength, and excellent flow and consolidation properties.
  • Green Concrete: This environmentally-friendly product has the maximum sustainability rating required for LEED building construction.
  • Premium Exposed: This premium specialty mix is designed for exposed aggregate finishing, offering an optimal finished appearance.

Our Commitment to Quality

We strive to deliver top quality results with all our products, operations and services. We understand the importance of quality when working with any project scope - whether it is a small project with demanding specifications, highway bridge decks or residential homes. PLC has experience in all types of projects, from big to small we deliver top quality results.

How do we meet these high standards? It begins with our employees, who are fully trained in equipment operation, product knowledge, and field testing procedures. All our concrete is produced per CSA A23.1/09 (CSA standard governing ready-mix concrete). We operate a concrete testing lab in Grande Prairie, and our employees are trained for testing by the ACI (American Concrete Institute).

Top-of-the-Line

We source all our cement powder, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and admixtures exclusively from Tier One suppliers to assure quality and supply availability. We produce all our own aggregates to achieve consistency and a stable supply, and these are tested to ensure they comply with CSA A23.1 for cleanliness, gradation, and chemical and mechanical properties. All our mix designs are developed by independent expert consultants. To guarantee consistent strength properties that exceed specification requirements, we regularly sample and test all our mix designs.

Continuing to Exceed

To keep our track record of exceeding customer expectations, we regularly inspect and maintain our production equipment, including aggregate crushers, concrete batch plants, and mixer trucks. Our concrete batch plants are inspected by Professional Engineers and Certified by Alberta Ready-Mix Concrete Association. Looking to the future, we have implemented a Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) program to improve operational efficiency and product quality.

Testing Lab Services

Peter-Lane Concrete has access to a complete and accredited concrete and aggregate testing lab at our facility Grande Prairie, AB. The focus of this lab is on our own internal testing for process and Quality Control, but we are happy to help with your testing needs.

Concrete is all around us - everywhere we live, work, and play. Although concrete may seem ordinary, it is a complex material with a long history dating back over 2,000 years!

Concrete’s History

Early forms of concrete-like materials were first used in ancient Egypt. Egyptians mixed lime and gypsum as a mortar to build the Great Pyramids we see today.

The Romans later invented “pozzuolana”, a mixture of slaked lime and volcanic ash. Mixed with stones and sand, pozzuolana created a material that closely resembles modern concrete. Pozzuolana can still be seen today in the ruins of ancient Rome.

Modern Concrete

The concrete we use today is a mixture of coarse aggregates (rock and stones), fine aggregates (sand), and a binder paste composed of Portland cement and water.

Concrete starts out as a thick, viscous material that hardens when the binder paste reacts with water, a process called “hydration.” This reaction starts out rapidly after the concrete is placed; the pace in which concrete sets can be controlled by continuous mixing or through the addition of chemical additives known as admixtures.

Concrete hardens by hydration for years after placement, and gains strength as it ages. The concrete strength measurement is based on its 28-day strength, which is deemed by engineering authorities as a suitable length of time for curing before testing a concrete’s strength.

Concrete Properties

Although the “recipe” for concrete might appear straightforward, a virtually infinite variety of concrete mixes are possible. It requires precision and controlling the amount and type of aggregate, cement, water, and chemical additives used in its production.

Some examples of these variations include:

  • Using fly ash instead of cement powder to slow hydration, often used in massive pours
  • Adding water reducers to preserve concrete’s workability while increasing its strength
  • Introducing retardants that delay setting of the concrete, sometimes necessary on very hot days
  • Adding colour to tint the concrete to meet architectural design specifications
